Actions Speak Louder Than Words

How many times have you head the saying – ‘Actions speak louder than words’? Perhaps you’ve said these words yourself, or you’ve been on the receiving end of these words. Whatever the case may be, do you live by this saying? Are you guilty of saying words and not following them up with your actions?

As a parent, I can honestly say that I am guilty of not following my words with actions. It’s is very easy to dictate and tell others to do what we know darn well, we can’t or won’t do. Are we fooling others or merely ourselves? Being a parent of many children and some who are now grown adults and teens, has taught me to choose my words wisely. It’s funny how quickly our children will point out our flaws and mistakes. Yes, they can be brutally honest at times and as much as I may dislike it at the moment, I am thankful in the end.

It’s important to evaluate your actions on a daily basis. Too often you can get caught up on your daily routines and neglect the fact that you are not following your own advise. Whether you are a parent, teacher, speaker, coach, business owner or something else, it’s important to choose your words wisely and more importantly choose your actions wisely. Try not to be a rule enforcer. Let’s face it, there will be times that rules will be broken. Perhaps not intentionally or maybe intentionally. But whatever the case may be, remember that you are human and will make mistakes. Others will judge you and point out that your actions are not following the words you speak, so it’s important to be conscious of your actions.

One way to ensure that your actions match your words is to be truthful and honest. Walk the talk and you won’t have to worry or wonder. As a parent or leader it’s important to ensure your actions follow your words or your message will be confusing. When your message is confusing you are risking the trust of others and your reputation as well. Let’s remember that trust is a huge issue in any and all relationships. It is not something to be taken lightly and just as we evaluate the actions of others in order to determine a trust level, the same is being done with you. Stay true to your words and your risk of jeopardizing trust in your relationships will be minimal. There will be those that don’t agree with your actions or words but as long as you are true to yourself others will take notice.

You may not win any popularity contests but let’s face it, the years of high school popularity contests are over. It’s time to live up to your title of adult, parent, leader and set the example for others in your world.  Be mindful of the words you choose, because whether you like it or not, you are influencing those around you.

So, are your actions matching the words you speak?
